Leading the Way in Pediatric IBD Research
Dr. Michael Kappelman is a pediatric gastroenterologist and researcher who has dedicated his career to improving care for children and teens living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). At UNC-Chapel Hill, he leads research that helps families and providers better understand which treatments work best, how to make care more consistent, and what life with IBD truly looks like for young people.
Dr. Kappelman studies big questions about IBD: What treatments work best? How can doctors make
care easier and more consistent? And what’s life really like for kids and families dealing with IBD? His
research helps doctors all over the country learn how to give the best care possible.
He’s even won the Sherman Prize for his groundbreaking work helping kids with IBD! But if you ask him, the real prize is working with families, doctors, and scientists who all care about the same thing, helping kids feel their best.
When he’s not working on COMPARE, Dr. Kappelman loves cheering on the Tar Heels and spending time with his family (dogs included).
From doctors and researchers to study coordinators, recruitment experts, data experts, patients and families, everyone has played a vital role in helping us understand what treatments work best for kids and teens with IBD.
From the very beginning, parents and people living with IBD have been key partners—helping design the study, review materials, and ensure COMPARE reflects real-life experiences. Their voices help make the study more meaningful, relatable, and focused on what matters most to families.
Across 31 pediatric IBD centers nationwide, our site principal investigators (PIs) lead the way in advancing COMPARE’s mission. They bring their expertise, creativity, and compassion to every step of the study. You can meet all 31 PIs and see where COMPARE is happening on our Study Locations page.
COMPARE is led in partnership with so many people behind the scenes, and we are all shaping the future of pediatric IBD care, together.

“We can only change the future of IBD if we work together—patients, clinicians, researchers,
and families. The best part of my job is knowing that every study,
every conversation, every connection might help children with IBD live healthier
and happier.”
